Frequently Asked Unlock Questions

The New Rules on Unlocking

As of December 1, 2017, unlocking your cell phone in Canada is FREE*, making it easier and more affordable than ever for Canadians to unlock their mobile devices.

With this exciting new policy in place, Canadian consumers have significantly more freedom to choose the best wireless provider and phone plan for their needs, both at home and abroad.

What Unlocking Means for You

Choice is the main reasons why most Canadians unlock their cellular devices, but there are a number of other reason too. Here are just a few:

What the New Unlock Law Means

All new cellular devices sold in Canada after December 1, 2017, must be unlocked.

Canadian wireless code: new phones sold after December 1, 2017, must be unlocked.
Canadian wireless code: all cellular-enabled phones, tablets, and hotspots, must be unlocked for free upon request. Simply contact your carrier.

All other cellular devices, including phones, tablets, and more, must be unlocked for free upon request.

Do I need to be tech-savvy to unlock my phone?

Not at all. Simply call your carrier to request the unlock and they'll walk you through the very quick and simple unlock process.

How often do I need to get my device unlocked?

Phones only need to be unlocked once. After that, they remain unlocked for the life of the device.

Does using a new SIM lock my phone to that carrier?

No, once unlocked, devices should never "re-lock", so you should be able to freely use compatible SIMs from any carrier without issue.

Will unlocking my phone affect my contacts, apps, etc.?

Nope. Unlocking your phone shouldn't have any impact on your device whatsoever. It just allows you to use other SIMs in your device.

Isn't it risky or illegal to unlock my phone?

No, that's a common myth. Unlocking your phone is perfectly legal in Canada and supported by the CRTC.

What is "Unlocking"?
(And Why Does It Matter?)

Unlocking your device allows you to use different SIM cards and connect to different cellular networks, so you aren't trapped by your current provider and stuck using only their plans.

This is great news for consumers because it gives them the freedom to choose the best possible wireless provider and phone plan for their needs.
